IASTM
So, What Is IASTM?
IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation. It’s a technique used by sports therapists, physiotherapists and sports medicine practitioners worldwide, in which specially designed tools — typically made from stainless steel with precision-ground edges — are used to work on soft tissue.
The tools allow the therapist to apply targeted pressure and friction to specific areas of tissue in a way that hands alone can’t replicate. IASTM is a targeted soft-tissue technique that can be incorporated into treatment where appropriate. It may be useful for areas of restricted movement, muscular tension and certain soft-tissue complaints.
What Does it Feel Like?
IASTM involves firm pressure applied with the tool at specific angles to the tissue. It can feel intense — particularly in areas of significant restriction or scar tissue — but should never be unmanageable. The sensation is quite different from massage and most clients find it easier to tolerate than they expected.
Some redness or mild bruising in the treated area is normal and typically resolves within a day or two.

Why IASTM Works for Tendon Injuries?
Many tendon injuries — particularly those that become chronic — are classified as tendinopathies rather than acute inflammations. This means the problem is degenerated, disorganised collagen within the tendon rather than active swelling.
This is why rest and anti-inflammatories often don’t fully resolve them. What tendinopathies need is a stimulus to reactivate the healing process and promote proper collagen remodelling. IASTM provides exactly that — combined with appropriate loading exercises, it’s consistently one of the most effective approaches for chronic tendon conditions.
